Transcript: Welcome to Indus Communities, I wanted to take a moment and acknowledge that you have a choice where you work and let you know how much we appreciate you choosing Indus. Indus was founded upon the principles of serving and caring for those around us. We specialize in taking under performing properties and repositioning them into successful, beautiful and thriving communities that our residents are proud to call home. By choosing Indus, you carry the responsibility and duty to help those that come through our doors find a home. What a wonderful opportunity each of us has to help those in our community. Whether it’s a prospect, a vendor or another team member, be mindful that we all have a common goal to be successful while continuing to provide a return to our investors. I mention investors and I am proud to say that 20% of our company is made up of our employee investors. Our mission is clear: We are committed to establishing communities where residents are happy and proud to call us home. I relate with many of our residents who are on a similar journey that me and my family took many years ago. Some of them are first-time renters immigrating to Houston and do not have any help. I am in the position to give back to my community and provide more resources to them. Our foundation, The Alka and Ajay Gupta Foundation, partners with all of our Indus communities to lend a helping hand many times throughout the year. In closing, If I could give any advice, I would ask that you to be considerate of one another and remember the following: Always give your best Be respectful to those around you Have enthusiasm and remember to enjoy your work Be forward thinking and think like an owner Be relentless in your quest to getting things accomplished Lead with integrity On behalf of my family, I want to welcome you to the Indus family. Together, great things are possible. Christmas Day Vision Morning Joe? Labor Day m g What we do... All rights reserved. 2 Processes About 11-12 years old, adolescents have explosive growth in the prefrontal cortex, which requires "reconnecting" to other parts of the brain. This process is completed sometime between 25-30 years of age. Teen Brain Processes Neural pathways used grow stronger Myelin= white matter in brain: serves as an insulator 1. New Growth in Myelin Massively increases speed of transmission (100 fold) of electrical impulses from neuron to neuron Pruning process increases connectivity and efficiency 2. Pruning process begins Neural pathways not used are pruned Prefrontal Cortex Prefrontal Cortex Under Construction! Prefrontal Cortex CEO of Brain Planning Body regulation: nervous systems Attuned communication: feeling "felt" Prefrontal Cortex Functions Emotional Balance Response flexibility strategizing judgment 11-12 years old growth spurt- then... Period of pruning... Organizing new neural connections. Fear modulation Empathy Insight Moral awareness Intuition Not connected during adolescence! Impact on teen... Impact 1. More dependence on amygdala (emotions) rather than prefrontal cortex (rational thinking. 2. No pathways from limbic system to prefrontal cortex (loss of ability to think thorugh consequences of actions) 3. Alcohol/drugs--judgment/decision making impacted; faster dependency rate with binge drinking; Prefrontal cortex and hippocampus susceptible to damage--memory and problem solving deficits. Stress: 1. High levels impair memory 2. Accelerates pruning--may increase vulnerability to mental illness 3. Gene expression can be changed by stress (mental illness) 4. Anxious attachment with parent makes worse The Amygdala Has role in emotional learning Amygdala Functions of Amygdada Role in emotional learning Links emotions with sensory input from environment Teen more reliant on amygdala than PC during reconstruction Functions Home of fight/flight/freeze responses Absorbs/processes info faster than conscious awareness Intensifies emotions like infatuation/puppy love Amygdala swells with testosterone Intensifies sexual desires Intensifies irritability Intensifies aggressiveness Amygdala swells with testosterone Limbic system revves up hormones Limbic system revves up hormones Hormones in 14 year old shift 28 times a day No connections to thinking PC to counteract Amygdala Dopamine regulates hormonal response Shifts in estrogens/progestins can cause down mood/depression Unable to interpret emotions of others Unable to interpret emotions of others At age 14, nearly all emotions are perceived as anger. Sees fear as anger Teens may have inner sense of conviction that the other person’s neural response is filled with hostility and he cannot be trusted. A blank expression or bump in hallway can be interpreted as intentional. They often experience a parent’s neutral statements as aggressive. Two Routes to Amygdala Slow route: Higher cortex sifts through information, reasons, reflects, then informs amygdala in a calm and rational way The slow route is used more in adults. Path to Amygdala Fast Route Bypasses the cortex Simply sends incoming streams of perception directly to the amygdala. Teens—even in calm conditions- the fast route to amygdala activations occurs more readily in teens than in adults Corpus Callosum Corpus Callosum Corpus Callosum Functions Cable of nerves that connect two hemispheres of brain involved in Creativity Involved in problem solving Functions Grows significantly during adolescence. Involved in intuition--the wisdom coming from the body signals. Impact Impact Until it is more developed.... The thickness and depth of the corpus callosum determines the ability to connect narrative to emotions, think through emotional experiences, and learn to regulate emotions. limited ability to regulate emotions Important to connect words with emotions Parietal Lobe Parietal Lobe Functions of Parietal Lobe Sensory information Functions Hot, cold, touch, pain, etc. Parietal Lobe Development key for planning, paying attention, and reasoning. Impact Cerebellum Cerebellum Cerebellum Cerebellum sensitive to elevated levels of cortisol. Releases cortisol--destroys dendritic connections Involved in coordination of muscles and physical movement Coordination of thinking processes Abuse: Physical Sexual Verbal Functions Balances body motions Cerebellum Enables a person to do more complicated things mathematics, music, philosophy, decision-making, social skills, etc. Impact Bibliography Designed by Next Interactive Presentations: https://www.nextinterativa.com/

Transcript: bEFORE YOU MAKE UP YOUR MIND, OPEN IT Anishua Roberts, Taija Horne Janae Belcher, Brianne Chamber WHAT The five most important parts of the brain outside of the lobes would be the: medulla pons hypothalamus hippocampus amygdala What is this Prezi about? Functions: breathing digestion heart beat blood pressure swallowing (automatic functions) Effect of not having the medulla oblongata: DEATH!!!!! Medulla Oblongata Medulla oblongata Pons The pons Functions: Connects the upper and lower part of the brain. Relays messages from the cortex and the cerrebellum. Plays a key role in sleep and dreaming. Location: Sits right above the medulla oblongata. Effect of not having the Pons: Stroke Hippocampus hippoCAMPUS Functions stores conscious memories responsible for long term memory' This is important because it helps us remember daily functions of life. Effect of not having the hippocampus: Memory loss Functions: Responsible for the response of memory of emotions... especially fear. The integritive center for emotions, emotional behavior, and motivation. Location: At the end of the hippocampus, in the frontal portion of the temporal lobe. Effects of not having the Amygdala: More likely to take bigger risk than one can handle with smaller potential gains. Amygdala Amygdala hypothalamus hypothalamus Functions: Responsibility for behaviors such as hunger and thrist Maintains body temperature Controls pituitary gland Serves as a bridge Effects of not having the Hypothalamus: You would have depression, hyper activity, abnormal, and responses to stress hypothalamus hypothalamus
