Drinking Water

Transcript: Why we need water Animals, plants and humans all have something in common. They all need water to survive. Water makes up over 50% of your body weight. If you go too long without it, you could die. It is needed for many functions in your body. Your blood has lots of water in it, which is needed to carry oxygen to the cells in your body. Without those cells, you would die. Another way that water helps your body is it helps you fight off illnesses and diseases. Water is in a lymph which is the fluid in your immune system. You need water to get rid of waste in your body, digest food, and even to sweat. Every cell depends on water for your body to function. When You Need Water Many things you don't know contain water. Fruits and vegetables are one of them. For example, when you bite into an orange, juice drips out. Another example is when you bite into celery, you taste water. There is not a certain amount of water that you need, because it all depends on your body and what situation you are in. For example if you are playing sports or exercising, you will need more water. Also, if you are in warm weather you will need more water to keep you hydrated. Even if you are not doing these things, you will need lots of water every day. You should always drink it with meals and whenever you are thirsty. Sports and Water The timing of drinking water is important too. If you are about to do a hard exercise or any kind of sport, make sure to drink water before, after, and during your exercise. If you don't drink anything, it will get in the way of your performance. Do not drink any sugary drinks while playing sports! The sugar only shrinks your cells and makes you more thirsty. Dehydration Dehydration can be very dangerous. It happens when your body does not get enough water. Dehydration can keep you from being the best you can be during your sport or exercise. You may not be as fast as you need to be or you may not have enough energy. A bad case of dehydration can make you sick. You should always drink water so you do not get dehydrated. Water is a great choice because it is refreshing and is good for you. How to Know When to Drink Water Your body stays hydrated by regulating water in your system. Your body holds onto water when you are lacking amounts of it or gets rid of it when you have too much. If your pee is dark, that means you need more water and your body is holding onto it. If it is light yellow, you are getting rid of extra water. Drink water when it is warm out and when you are thirsty. Your body will thank you! Let's Review! 1. What is essential for all plants, animals and humans to survive? 2. How much water do you need to drink a day?
