Police Officers Background

Transcript: Policy Implications.... Explain/Define (Background) An officer as a child lived in a wealthy white neighborhood (Ward3)most of his life. He went to predominately white schools through his education process. The incarceration of a family friend lead him to abuse authority. His mom and dad were killed in a random drive by shooting, which he seen committed by a group of dread head ,dark skinned, dressed in all ashy-black baggy clothes, listening to loud rap music with a drug odor coming from the car(characteristics of suspects). He becomes a police who now has to work in the predominately black neighborhood (Ward8). Because of his background experiences his perception of a suspect of certain race or economic groups that live in that ward to him could be looked at as threatening to society or himself. (Police Brutality) This officer will most likely use brutal force in direct response to any violence in the community. he probably does not want to work in. Most officers use force in response to what they perceive as a threat. EX: If a an alfa wolf sees another alfa wolf in the forest it will not get scared ,maybe if it sees a lion. If a white officer that never had any interactions with a black man now is stuck working in the neighborhood how could he possibly know if the "dice game thugs" are being hostile, disrespectful or could care less. Our experience shape who we are. Shadonna Davis Police Officers Background + Characteristics of the suspect = Police Brutality How they work together to produce criminality.... Doesn't explain why some black officers have been included in the police brutality reports of black men murdered by police "don't judge a book by its cover" a black guy playing loud music with dreads ,baggy clothing, while waiting in line in an atm kiosk. (Dj not robber) police brutality against mental and physically impaired community. How are these people a threat ?(some) Police Officers Background - Officers have previous experiences prior to becoming a police. Depending on the experience , good or bad it shapes his or hers reality or perception of situations and people they deal with while working. Family Values(social, political, work) , socialization, attitude Seeing someone treated inconsiderately by teachers the officer is now distrustful of similar people like the teacher. An injury sustained by a parent leading an officer into taking on a lot of responsibility. The incarceration of a family friend leads to a officer to abuse authority. officer had few friends growing up due to being considered beneath most others. Characteristics of the suspect- Demeanor- the way a suspect conducts them self disrespectful , hostile, detached, couldn't care less, sarcastic Style of Dress- the way someone dresses pants below the waist, biker chains, no clothing ,ski -mask Grooming - the things that you do to make your appearance matted hair, dirty finger nails , messy clothes Police Brutality-Police brutality is where a police officer beats a person or criminal for no apparent reason and is not threatened by the criminal or has no fear for his life. Police brutality is a controversial issue in the media that concerns the public and law enforcement. The force by police is hard to differentiate between reasonable and excessive force but somewhere down the line it turns into brutality. Oscar Grant was a African American man that was shot laying face down on his back by a police officer on New Years day 2009.David Ayers was a homosexual man that was falsely accused and spent 11½ years in prison for a crime he never committed. Kelly Thomas was homeless man with schizophrenia that was beaten unrecognizable and died five days later. All three of these men have different characteristics of and they were suspects brutalized by the law enforcement. All police departments should have a ratio of officers of color and national origin that reflects the diversity of the community it serves. more black cops working in black communities bringing into law enforcement people reflecting a variety of college disciplines. recruit people from different backgrounds and that have had different experiences Individuals should be psychologically suited to handle all the requirements of the job. not racist ,sexist ,homophobic WEAKNESSES

Youth Perception of Risk As a community we can help youth take steps to make healthy choices and not use substances. Not all youth use substances. The longer they wait to use, the better off they will be So, it is not surprising that young people who use alcohol and drugs have other problems... Transcript: Police inquiry project Is policing the most stressful career? Christine Peter Why did I choose this topic? Why did I choose this topc? I decided to choose this topic becasue I thought that it made a good inquiry question, and it was also very interesting to think about since I never thought about the stress a police officer might go through on a daily basis. To get to know the question better, I will have to do research about the types of stress police go through, why it is caused, and how it affects them. I think that this makes a good inquiry question because you have to do your own research, and think about it to come up with an answer. Picture Gather and investigate For my research I used www.frontiersin.org. "Stress can affect police officer's mental health, performance, and their interactions with citizens"(Queiros, 2020, p.1). I chose this source because it gave me useful information, and a good perspective of the topic. Another website I used was www.cbc.ca. It stated that "Police are significantly at higher risk for long-term physical and mental ailments than the general population due to daily stress on the job"(Violanti, 2012, p.1). Using these websites I figured out that policing is a very stressful job, but I'm yet to figure out, is it the most stressful job? Gather and investigate PICTURES PICTURES Websites: -www.frontiersin.org -www.cbc.ca Websites What did I learn? Using the information I had from the sources, I learned that there are high numbers of depression, anxiety, burnout, and suicide among police officers. I found out that as much as 85% of police have high operational stress levels, 11% critical values for burnout, and 28% high distress levels, with 55% at risk of a psychological disorder. One of the greatest causes for police stress is fatigue. Fatigue can impair an officer's mental and physical ability, create a cycle of fatigue, limit job performance , and damage an officer's health. In fact, studies show that job stress has consistently increased among police officers in the last decade, and this can negatively affect both the individual person, the organization, or society. What did I learn? Police on sick leave due to phychological reasons TIMELINE 2010 4,500 5,400 5,000 6,200 2015 Pictures Reflection My inquiry process This process definately did help me understand inquiry better. It showed me what making an inquiry question and topic is supposed to be like, and how it works. Once I started researching the topic I was actually very interested in learning more. Though I was very into this topic, I don't think that I will continue to research this topic because I do not need to. It won't come to my use later on.
